Flexport is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the Autonomous Freight Systems team in San Francisco to lead the development of next-generation AI-powered rates platforms. This role suits an experienced engineer who wants to drive the transition from assisted sales to automated, tech-run logistics for thousands of shippers.

Role Overview

The Autonomous Freight Systems group is a brand new, AI-first engineering team based in San Francisco. This position serves as the technical anchor for creating client-facing rates platforms and self-serve freight booking experiences. The role focuses on building the intelligence layer that permits clients to commit freight autonomously, removing the need for manual intervention from account executives or operations staff. The position involves designing end-to-end AI agents capable of managing pricing intelligence and booking compliance without human oversight.

Key Responsibilities

Design and ship end-to-end AI agents to manage pricing intelligence and booking compliance without human oversight.
Develop tooling and secure AI infrastructure required to safely expose internal logistics data to LLMs.
Navigate emerging landscapes of agent patterns, RAG, and prompt engineering to solve complex domain problems.
Build and launch products rapidly and incrementally with frequent daily production deployments.
Mentor engineers across the team and foster a culture of technical excellence.
Partner with the Engineering Manager to define technical roadmaps and hiring standards.
Collaborate with Pricing, Sales, Operations, and Design teams on domain challenges.

Requirements

Demonstrated LLM fluency, including practical experience with agent patterns, RAG, and prompt engineering in production environments.
Experience with workflow orchestration, such as Temporal, and building reliable systems around non-deterministic AI.
Strong entrepreneurial drive to identify high-leverage automation problems and design AI-driven solutions independently.
Product instincts to identify valuable features and build data-heavy applications prioritizing high-quality user interaction.
Architecture leadership experience in guiding technical initiatives across multiple teams or systems.
Technical rigor focused on simple, well-tested code and large-scale distributed systems.
Strong technical communication skills to convey concepts to business partners, product managers, and engineers.

Nice to Have

Experience with the company tech stack, including Java, Spring Boot, Ruby on Rails, React, and AWS.
Background in logistics, supply chain, or freight technology.
Experience building internal tools or operator-facing applications.
A strong bias for action in solving spotted problems.
