Role Overview

Flexport seeks a Forward Deployed Engineer to join the Engineering department in San Francisco. This on-site role requires up to 50 percent travel to customer headquarters and logistics sites. The professional in this position acts as an operational strike-team leader, merging full-stack software engineering, applied artificial intelligence, operations research, and executive client strategy.

Key Responsibilities

Travel to client sites to map end-to-end supply chain processes, audit legacy systems, and uncover financial leaks.
Design and build production solutions spanning customer applications, internal tools, APIs, data pipelines, decision-support systems, and workflow automations.
Design and ship production-grade AI applications, agentic LLM workflows, and decision engines.
Apply optimization algorithms and analytical methods to real-world logistics challenges such as routing, inventory positioning, and container utilization.
Drive high-velocity deployment sprints from discovery and architecture to live production deployment and verified ROI measurement.
Partner with core Product and Platform Engineering teams to turn custom client builds into reusable platform capabilities.
Work side-by-side with frontline logistics teams at ports and cross-docks to validate code in live operational workflows.
Communicate technical trade-offs and financial outcomes directly to client technical leaders and C-suite executives.

Requirements

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree, or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field.
At least 4 years of professional software engineering experience building customer-facing or mission-critical applications.
Demonstrated ability to build and integrate AI and machine learning solutions, including LLM orchestration or agentic workflows.
Strong skills in designing data models, pipeline transformations, API integrations, and event-driven workflows.
Passion for on-site collaboration, whiteboarding complex workflows, and building deep trust with technical and business stakeholders.
High autonomy, self-starter mentality, and a track record of delivering end-to-end projects with measurable impact.
Willingness to travel up to 50 percent to customer headquarters and logistics sites.

Nice to Have

Domain knowledge in global supply chain, ocean or air freight, customs compliance, warehousing, inventory management, or trade financing.
Background in operations research, linear programming, network optimization, route planning, queueing theory, or enterprise implementation.
Prior experience as a Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Architect, Technical Consultant, or Founding Engineer in a fast-paced environment.

US base salary range: $206,181 to $252,000 USD.
