About this role

Flexport is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the Autonomous Freight Systems team based in San Francisco, California. This role involves building and scaling client-facing rates platforms and self-serve freight booking experiences for global shipping operations.

Role Overview

The Autonomous Freight Systems group is an AI-first engineering team operating out of San Francisco to construct Flexport's client-facing rates platform and self-serve freight booking experience completely from scratch. In this capacity, the engineer will manage two critical surfaces within the Client App: rate visibility tools and automated freight booking channels for ocean, air, and trucking. This position suits a self-driven technologist with a strong background in full-stack development and production-grade artificial intelligence integration who thrives in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

Take full end-to-end technical ownership of core systems, managing everything from database schema design and backend APIs to customer-facing React user interfaces.
Identify operational gaps, inefficiencies, and engineering problems across domains, leading resolution efforts proactively.
Design and implement AI-powered features, building production systems that incorporate agent workflows and LLM-backed automation.
Create comprehensive technical designs, produce well-reasoned proposals, and align team members prior to implementation.
Mentor and support engineers through code reviews, pairing sessions, and design feedback to elevate team output.
Collaborate directly with product, design, pricing, and operations teams to translate complex domain challenges into polished solutions.
Build and ship code incrementally within a high-velocity deployment pipeline that pushes to production multiple times daily.
Ensure system reliability and quality by establishing metrics, monitoring tools, and incident learnings across all owned services.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of professional software engineering experience with a demonstrated history of delivering production-grade systems independently.
Deep ownership instinct with personal accountability for operational outcomes and system resilience.
Full-stack fluency spanning database schema design, API contracts, and frontend architecture.
Hands-on experience developing production software that integrates Large Language Models into actual user workflows, managing challenges like latency, cost, and reliability.
High agency, drive, and the ability to identify high-leverage problems without direct instruction.
Strong technical rigor emphasizing simple, well-tested, and well-structured codebases.
Clear communication skills capable of addressing both product managers and technical staff.
Proficiency in deploying, monitoring, and maintaining cloud infrastructure services using AWS.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with elements of the company technology stack, including Java, Spring Boot, Ruby on Rails, and React.
