About this role

Role Overview

The Senior AI Engineer position at Doctronic in New York City offers a hybrid onsite, full-time opportunity to scale AI-driven healthcare consultations to billions of patients. This role is ideal for a research-minded engineer who wants to advance clinical safety, automated reasoning, and evidence retrieval in real-world medicine.

Key Responsibilities

Design and implement advanced agentic architectures for the AI doctor, including reasoning, reflection, verification, tool use, and clinical escalation.
Create robust evaluation platforms, rubrics, and simulations to measure real performance and determine the impact of system interventions.
Apply techniques like fine-tuning, distillation, reinforcement learning, and preference optimization to enhance specific model components.
Build search, ranking, retrieval, and grounding algorithms connecting clinical reasoning to trusted medical evidence and patient context.
Own problems end-to-end, from initial framing to measuring practical results alongside clinical and product partners.

Requirements

Bring at least 3 years of highly relevant applied or research experience in AI or machine learning with an advanced degree, or 7+ years of relevant experience building ML systems with recent hands-on work in generative AI and LLMs.
Demonstrate deep experience in at least two areas: agentic architectures, model evaluation, model training and fine-tuning, or search, ranking, retrieval, and RAG.
Possess strong machine learning fundamentals covering training data, objectives, metrics, calibration, and failure analysis.
Show strong software engineering fundamentals to build actual production systems rather than just notebooks or isolated experiments.
Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively across engineering, product, and clinical teams.

Nice to Have

Published research, patents, meaningful open-source contributions, or novel production machine learning systems.
Experience building AI solutions at early-stage or high-growth companies.
Background in healthcare, clinical AI, or other regulated safety-critical domains with familiarity in standards like HIPAA, FHIR, EHR, and HL7.
Experience working with human-feedback systems, RLHF, simulation, or synthetic data generation.
Background in AI safety, bias detection, fairness, or calibration.
