Role Overview

Level AI builds conversational intelligence platforms for modern contact centers that analyze millions of interactions to provide real-time guidance and automate quality assurance. The Principal Machine Learning Engineer shapes the technical direction for advanced AI projects by leading research in large language models, speech understanding, and retrieval systems, and bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and scaled production.

Key Responsibilities

Shape and execute the research roadmap covering core artificial intelligence capabilities such as LLMs, speech understanding, retrieval-augmented generation, and agentic systems.
Create, train, fine-tune, and evaluate advanced models, transitioning them successfully from initial prototypes into stable production-grade systems.
Direct the architecture for scalable training and inference pipelines capable of handling massive customer data securely.
Create strict evaluation benchmarks and performance standards regarding model reliability, safety, and overall quality.
Collaborate directly with product, platform, and machine learning engineering groups to release research into customer-facing offerings.
Guide and mentor senior and mid-level engineering team members, define engineering benchmarks, and act as a technical multiplier.
Monitor industry advancements, test emerging methods, and showcase the organization's technical achievements externally.

Requirements

Educational background in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a closely related discipline, supported by around 7 years or more of practical experience applying machine learning in production environments.
Advanced knowledge of modern deep learning, transformer architectures, and LLMs alongside expertise in NLP, speech, information retrieval, or multimodal modeling.
Proven history of converting research ideas into deployed, scaled products that deliver tangible business value.
Advanced programming fluency in Python alongside a major deep learning framework like PyTorch, backed by strong software engineering foundations.
Practical background in training and serving large models, which includes distributed training setups, optimization techniques, and efficient inference strategies.
Established technical leadership experience demonstrated through setting strategic direction and mentoring colleagues.
Strong communication skills capable of translating complex technical concepts for diverse audiences.

Nice to Have

Background in contact center technology, conversational AI, or speech analytics.
Academic publications at recognized venues like NeurIPS, ICML, ACL, EMNLP, or Interspeech, or notable open-source contributions.
Familiarity with agentic frameworks, orchestration systems, and tool use for large language models.
Understanding of responsible AI practices, model alignment, and safety evaluations.
