Role Overview

The Lead AI Architect - Data Platform position at Banyan Software involves designing, building, and running a centralized data and AI platform for the organization based in the United States. This role suits an experienced enterprise architect who can combine hands-on coding with team leadership in an AI-first environment.

Key Responsibilities

Define and own the target-state data and AI architecture for the company.
Design and build an AWS-centric data lake that serves as a single source of truth.
Establish patterns for storage, cataloging, query, ingestion, modeling, and lineage using tools like S3, Glue, Athena, and Redshift.
Stand up an AI experimentation layer supporting model access through Anthropic, OpenAI, and other LLMs.
Establish data contracts, schema standards, naming conventions, and a domain model.
Partner with embedded business analysts in Finance, M&A, and Business Development to translate use cases into platform requirements.
Define security, privacy, and AI safety guardrails, including data classification and PII handling.
Write code, ship infrastructure, run code reviews, and debug production issues.
Build and mentor a team, including vertical-aligned senior business AI analysts and contractors.
Own platform reliability, observability, and cost by setting SLOs and monitoring usage.
Represent AI and data architecture to executives, portfolio companies, and external partners.

Requirements

Ten or more years of experience building data and AI platforms in production at scale.
Deep AWS expertise, including hands-on work with S3, IAM, KMS, networking, Glue, Lake Formation, Athena, Redshift, SageMaker, Bedrock, and EKS or ECS.
Strong data architecture skills encompassing lakehouse patterns, open table formats like Iceberg, data modeling, ingestion frameworks, and orchestration tools like Airflow.
Real experience with modern AI and MLOps platform patterns such as feature stores, model registries, experiment tracking, and retrieval-augmented generation.
Working knowledge of AI safety principles, including data classification and access tiering.
Proficiency in Python, SQL, and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or AWS CDK.
Prior player-coach experience leading small teams, setting hiring bars, and mentoring engineers.
Strong communication skills suited for both technical and executive audiences.
Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.

Nice to Have

Experience in private-equity-backed or holding-company environments with multiple business units.
Experience designing AI guardrails for non-public, regulated, or sensitive data.
Track record of treating internal platforms as products with named users and SLAs.
Familiarity with Snowflake or Databricks.
Past experience as an early platform hire at a growth-stage company.
Master's degree in a relevant field.
