Role Overview

As a Data Scientist focusing on AI Safety, the successful candidate will operate at the intersection of data science, machine learning, AI safety, and policy. This position involves turning real-world product data into robust, well-structured datasets utilized for training and evaluating models. Working alongside safety researchers, engineers, and policy specialists, the individual will translate intricate safety requirements into practical data systems, beginning with hands-on collection and expanding into scalable methodologies.

Key Responsibilities

Take complete ownership of safety datasets from end to end, covering collection, cleaning, labelling, quality control, versioning, and training readiness.
Collaborate closely with policy specialists to translate safety policies into clear, consistent labelling and evaluation criteria.
Design and manage labelling processes, which includes sourcing, onboarding, and overseeing external contributors to ensure high quality standards.
Construct evaluation workflows for production models, utilizing real-world data to monitor performance and uncover potential issues.
Develop lightweight Python and SQL pipelines and tooling to ensure fast and reproducible data work, partnering with ML engineers.

Requirements

Professional experience as a Data Scientist or in a similar capacity working directly with real-world datasets and machine learning models.
Strong understanding of dataset fundamentals, including collection, cleaning, sampling, labelling, quality control, and evaluation.
Proficiency in Python and SQL for conducting analysis and managing practical data workflows.
Exceptional critical thinking and judgment, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and nuance while translating complex guidelines into consistent, scalable decisions.
Autonomous work ethic and clear communication skills, capable of bridging disciplines like policy, engineering, and research in a fast-paced setting.

Nice to Have

Background in AI safety, trust and safety, content moderation, or fraud and abuse detection.
Prior experience building datasets, evaluation frameworks, or working with adversarial and safety-focused machine learning.
Experience overseeing human-in-the-loop labelling processes, dataset versioning, or machine learning pipeline tooling.
Familiarity with operationalizing guidelines alongside policy or legal teams.
