Technical Program Manager, Storage & Data Infrastructure
About this role
OpenAI builds data and storage infrastructure that spans data platforms, online databases, and file and object storage, ultimately supporting ingestion, processing, and durable persistence. Technical Program Managers in this group define and lead initiatives across these architecture layers, connecting model requirements directly to performance outcomes like latency, efficiency, and scale.
The incoming practitioner coordinates exabyte-scale storage and infrastructure environments supporting millions of CPU cores, translating product needs into standardized capacity units and deployment paths. Success in the position requires bridging gaps between engineering groups, designing robust recovery and migration procedures, and treating cost optimization as a fundamental architectural constraint.
What you will do
- Translate model, product, and data-platform needs into precise access patterns, consistency, durability, freshness, availability, and scalability requirements.
- Partner with engineering teams to transform data and storage architecture into repeatable scale units with standardized provisioning and readiness checks.
- Lead cross-stack programs connecting ingestion, processing, databases, indexes, and file or object storage.
- Evaluate physical and logical footprints, replication amplification, caching, and network movement against operational costs.
- Drive resilience and recovery programs that incorporate explicit failure scenarios, validation, and safe execution state resumption.
- Coordinate lifecycle correctness across files, objects, databases, and data platforms while incorporating privacy and access controls.
- Lead adoption and migrations through compatibility checks, representative workload testing, staged cutovers, and operational handoffs.
What you need
- Independent ownership of complex production programs in data platforms, databases, or storage infrastructure.
- Deep working knowledge of hyperscaler or cloud storage technologies like Amazon S3 or Azure Blob Storage.
- Comprehensive understanding of the full data and storage stack, including product access, storage engines, replication, and the CPU layer.
- Demonstrated ability to translate model and consumer needs into precise platform requirements and challenge existing assumptions.
- Experience leading delivery across product, model, data, database, storage, and infrastructure teams without single-team end-to-end ownership.
- Proven capacity to use workload evidence to balance capability, correctness, reliability, latency, and cost efficiency.
Benefits
- Relocation assistance to new employees
