Technical Operations Analyst, User Safety & Risk
About this role
The Risk Incubation and Systems group within the User Safety and Risk Operations team builds the analytics, automation, monitoring, and operating systems that protect products and users from abuse, fraud, and safety risks. As a technical operations analyst based in London, the person in this role will solve ambiguous operational challenges by querying data, building dashboards, and designing lightweight automations across emerging-risk detection, operational quality, and launch readiness.
OpenAI operates at the front line of real-world safety management, requiring practitioners who can translate operational signals into timely decisions and effective system interventions. The position calls for an experienced individual contributor who can navigate complex datasets, collaborate across engineering, data science, and policy teams, and apply strong judgment when dealing with sensitive content.
What you will do
- Independently scope ambiguous operational problems and frontier risks into clear analyses, workflows, tools, or decision systems.
- Analyze large and complex datasets to identify patterns, data-quality gaps, operational blind spots, and source-of-truth issues.
- Build and maintain dashboards, monitoring systems, alerts, recurring reporting, and workflow automations.
- Develop systems for detecting and assessing emerging risks, including classifier, evaluation, labeling, and human-review feedback loops.
- Support major cloud deployments and partnerships by validating data pipelines, investigating anomalies, and improving reporting mechanisms.
- Design practical quality controls such as sampling plans, golden datasets, validation holdouts, thresholds, and human review paths.
- Use AI and LLM-based tools to improve speed and scale while applying appropriate testing and human oversight.
What you need
- Have five or more years of experience in technical operations, data analytics, trust and safety, risk operations, product operations, or a related field.
- Demonstrate strong SQL skills and comfort working with unfamiliar datasets, schemas, joins, and data-quality issues.
- Have hands-on experience building and owning practical dashboards, tools, automations, or operating systems from scoping through maintenance.
- Apply AI and LLM tools to accelerate workflows while independently validating outputs and managing failure modes.
- Understand how to measure technical or operational systems using concepts like precision, recall, coverage, and error analysis.
- Exercise sound judgment in scaled operations involving queues, escalations, reviewer workflows, and incident response.
Nice to have
- Experience in trust and safety, fraud, scaled or adversarial abuse, integrity, or emerging-risk detection.
- Experience supporting cloud, enterprise, or privacy-preserving deployments with constrained data access.
- Experience with classifiers, evaluations, golden datasets, labeling programs, reviewer calibration, or model-quality measurement.
- Experience with Python, notebooks, data-pipeline troubleshooting, or lightweight technical development.
- Experience designing quality systems or workflows involving vendors, BPOs, or distributed operational teams.
