About this role

The Talent Engineer position at Gong in Austin is a unique 0-to-1 builder role focused on creating automated talent acquisition systems, making it ideal for software engineers who want to apply their technical skills to recruiting operations. This position suits an experienced builder who prefers writing code and integrating tools over manual recruiting tasks.

Role Overview

Today, Gong runs its talent acquisition operations across disconnected systems like Workday, Greenhouse, Gem, and BrightHire without centralized visibility. This role exists to establish a brand-new talent engineering function from scratch. The chosen candidate will not handle sourcing, screening, or interviewing candidates. Instead, the focus rests entirely on building the underlying infrastructure, automations, and AI-powered workflows that allow recruiters and hiring managers to operate efficiently and independently.

Key Responsibilities

Connect and integrate major HR and talent platforms including Workday, Greenhouse, Gem, and BrightHire.
Establish a governed talent intelligence repository that enables AI tools to reason over real context and data with appropriate permissions.
Design and deploy agentic solutions across the hiring lifecycle, such as automated time-in-stage reporting, bottleneck visibility, and self-serve conversational pipeline tools for leadership.
Surface previously qualified candidates in the applicant tracking system against new open roles.
Build systems to monitor interview quality signals, predict at-risk offers, and model recruiter workload capacity.
Evaluate build-versus-buy options for the talent tech stack alongside management to reduce external vendor reliance.
Apply structured experimentation to outbound sourcing and offer effectiveness, utilizing agents to monitor conversion rates and refine test designs.
Partner directly with central People Analytics, HRIS, and IT teams within established company-wide governance models.

Requirements

Demonstrated experience building production-level solutions that integrate with external systems using APIs, OAuth, webhooks, rate limits, and error handling.
Strong backend scripting capabilities utilizing Python or TypeScript/Node.
Proficiency in SQL for joining and querying data across multiple systems.
Hands-on experience working with LLM APIs and tool or function-calling patterns.
Sound instincts regarding access-control design and permission frameworks.
Experience designing and analyzing structured A/B or multivariate experiments.
High comfort level with ambiguity in a newly defined role.

Nice to Have

Prior background in analytics engineering, automation engineering, or solutions engineering.
