Role Overview

AlphaSense is hiring a remote Staff Software Engineer in Canada to lead the architecture, evolution, and reliability of a global financial data extraction and normalization platform. This role suits an experienced engineer with a strong background in distributed systems who wants to shape AI-driven search technology.

Key Responsibilities

Own the architecture and evolution of a large-scale data extraction and normalization platform that ingests records from HTML, PDF, APIs, and spreadsheets.
Minimize human-in-the-loop validation by introducing AI-based validation, confidence scoring, provenance tracking, and deterministic safeguards.
Establish clear system contracts for correctness, traceability, and confidence while balancing AI-driven methods with rules-based systems.
Identify and fix architectural bottlenecks impacting scale, accuracy, and developer velocity while serving as a technical authority for design.
Partner with product teams and downstream consumers to define quality bars, service-level agreements, and success metrics.
Serve as a technical escalation point for production issues and mentor senior engineers while remaining hands-on with implementation.

Requirements

Minimum of 10 years of experience building and operating large-scale production systems.
Proven background in designing data ingestion, extraction, or processing systems at a massive scale.
Deep expertise in distributed systems, data platforms, pipelines, AI/ML-powered extraction systems, or platform engineering.
Demonstrated ability to build trustworthy systems combining probabilistic artificial intelligence and deterministic approaches.
Strong grasp of system reliability, observability, failure modes, and iterative hardening.
Track record of reducing human overhead through superior system design and providing technical leadership across teams.

Nice to Have

Experience with document understanding, natural language processing, or financial data extraction.
Background in building provenance, lineage, or confidence-scoring systems.
Familiarity with cloud-native architectures and modern data stacks.
Experience owning internal platforms utilized by multiple teams.
