The Staff Software Engineer position at AlphaSense is a remote, United States-based role focused on leading the design, evolution, and reliability of a global financial data extraction and normalization platform. Key Responsibilities

Own the architecture and evolution of a large-scale data extraction and normalization platform that processes hundreds of thousands of records from heterogeneous sources like PDFs, HTML, APIs, and spreadsheets.
Define and execute strategies to minimize human-in-the-loop validation by leveraging AI-based validation, confidence scoring, provenance tracking, and deterministic safeguards.
Establish clear system contracts for correctness, traceability, and confidence while balancing AI-driven methodologies with procedural and rules-based systems.
Identify and fix architectural and operational bottlenecks that impact scale, accuracy, and developer velocity.
Act as the technical authority to review designs, overhaul critical systems, and introduce innovative platforms or tooling.
Partner closely with product teams and downstream consumers to define quality thresholds, service-level agreements, and success metrics.
Serve as a technical escalation point for production issues, reliability failures, and systemic risks.
Mentor senior engineers, elevate technical culture, and remain hands-on with critical implementations while contributing to long-term technical strategy.

Requirements

Ten or more years of experience building and operating large-scale production systems.
Proven background in designing data ingestion, extraction, or processing systems at scale.
Deep expertise in distributed systems, data platforms and pipelines, AI or ML-powered extraction or classification systems, or platform and infrastructure engineering.
Demonstrated ability to build trustworthy systems combining probabilistic artificial intelligence and deterministic approaches.
Strong comprehension of system reliability, observability, failure modes, and iterative hardening.
Experience minimizing operational or human overhead through superior system design.
Track record of technical leadership across teams without requiring formal people management responsibilities.
Comfort operating within ambiguity and driving clarity independently, paired with a passion for using AI responsibly.

Nice to Have

Experience working with document understanding, natural language processing, or financial data extraction.
Background in building provenance, lineage, or confidence-scoring systems.
Familiarity with cloud-native architectures and modern data stacks.
Experience shaping or owning internal platforms used by multiple cross-functional teams.
