Inworld AI is hiring a remote Staff / Principal Software Engineer based in Vancouver, Canada, to help expand its real-time artificial intelligence infrastructure. This individual contributor position is suited for an experienced backend developer who wants to build high-volume systems that power consumer-facing AI applications.

Role Overview

As a Staff / Principal Software Engineer, the focus is on creating and scaling the platform backend that handles massive volumes of real-time AI workloads. The role operates within the Platform department, delivering intelligent routing layers, real-time APIs, and scalable infrastructure to support billions of interactions daily. This is a hands-on technical position focused on direct contributions alongside skilled engineering and machine learning peers.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with product managers and technical leads to determine critical product priorities and establish significant engineering scope.
Operate with high technical autonomy to design, propose, and implement solutions using appropriate technologies and standards.
Build and maintain the Inworld Router, managing core systems for multi-provider failover, latency-based routing, real-time observability, and live A/B testing at scale.
Deliver API-based model services including text-to-speech, speech-to-text, knowledge retrieval-augmented generation, and large language models.
Build control and optimization services, system-wide billing, and developer tooling while partnering closely with machine learning teams.
Optimize development speed and operational quality to ship fast in a rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.

Requirements

Strong programming skills in a statically typed backend language such as Go, Python, C++, or Rust.
Proven experience building and deploying cloud-based services capable of handling hundreds of queries per second or more.
Practical background working with relational databases like PostgreSQL or MySQL.
Hands-on experience utilizing caching tools such as Redis or Memcached, pub/sub queues, data pipelines, and cloud storage solutions.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to coordinate effectively with cross-functional teammates.

Nice to Have

Background in constructing API gateways, proxy layers, routing architectures, or multi-provider orchestration systems.
Familiarity with analytics or time-series databases including ClickHouse, Timescale, or InfluxDB.
Experience implementing OpenTelemetry.
Proficiency in C++.

Salary and Benefits

This full-time position comes with a base salary range of C$180,000 to C$260,000. Total compensation packages also include equity and benefits. Individual compensation is determined based on work location, experience level, competencies, and business requirements.
