About this role

The Staff Platform Engineer, AI role at True Anomaly is an opportunity to lead the creation of enterprise-level artificial intelligence infrastructure based in Denver, CO or Long Beach, CA. This position suits an experienced software professional ready to integrate cutting-edge AI capabilities directly into daily operations for space defense technology.

Role Overview

True Anomaly is scaling its operations by making artificial intelligence a core operating capability rather than a side experiment. As a Staff AI Platform Engineer, you will be one of the foundational hires responsible for designing the infrastructure, tooling, and integrations that put AI directly into workflows across the enterprise. This position focuses heavily on building and shipping production systems that engineers, program managers, operators, and business teams utilize every day. You will report to the Chief Security Officer within the platform engineering organization, operating with high autonomy, visibility to executive leadership, and the opportunity to shape how a fast-growing defense technology company scales with AI. Please note that this is an onsite hybrid role requiring at least three days per week in the office, and applicants must be US citizens with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the architectural design of AI platform infrastructure for enterprise-wide rollout.
Build and maintain API integrations, model access pipelines, system connectors like MCP and tool use, and on-premises compute environments.
Develop custom AI-powered applications, workflows, and integrations connecting frontier models to internal systems like project management, communications, and documentation.
Evaluate and select AI providers, tools, and platforms, driving build-versus-buy decisions based on capability, speed to value, and compliance.
Partner with security, IT, and engineering teams to guarantee AI deployments satisfy government security and compliance requirements across data classification levels.
Contribute to AI training and enablement initiatives, such as hands-on workshops, shared resources, office hours, and documentation.
Stay current on the evolving AI landscape to offer informed recommendations regarding new models and capabilities.
Mentor other engineers to support their professional growth and technical excellence.

Requirements

Typically 8+ years of software engineering, cloud engineering, or DevOps experience featuring a track record of technical leadership and architectural decision-making.
Strong background in software engineering with experience building and shipping production systems utilizing languages like Python or TypeScript.
Hands-on experience using modern AI-powered development tools to automate routine tasks and deliver production code.
Practical experience working with large language model APIs, prompt engineering, tool use, retrieval-augmented generation, or agent frameworks like CrewAI and Pydantic AI.
Demonstrated ability to manage a broad technical surface area, moving easily between infrastructure, application development, and platform architecture.
Experience establishing software development lifecycle best practices including CI/CD pipelines, continuous testing, and monitoring.
Experience deploying and operating production workloads in cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex AI ideas for non-technical audiences.
US citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret security clearance to comply with government space technology export regulations.

Nice to Have

Experience deploying AI or ML systems within government, defense, or regulated environments under strict security constraints.
Familiarity with government cloud environments like AWS GovCloud and Azure Government, plus authorization frameworks including FedRAMP, NIST 800-53, and IL4/IL5.
Experience with model hosting, fine-tuning, benchmarking, or evaluating cost tradeoffs.
Background in LLM evaluation frameworks, OpenTelemetry tracing, or other model measurement and observability tools.
Experience building knowledge retrieval systems, embedding pipelines, or enterprise search infrastructure.
Active US Secret or Top-Secret security clearance.
