Engineering Manager, Perception AI
About this role
Engineers who thrive in complex, high-stakes environments and possess a deep background in computer vision, robotics, or perception AI will find this role a natural fit. True Anomaly is seeking a technical leader to build and guide the perception AI team responsible for enabling autonomous spacecraft operations. The team develops world models, generative AI for synthetic training data, multi-target tracking systems, edge-deployed AI models, and camera calibration systems that operate under strict compute and power constraints in space.
This position involves driving both high-level strategy and hands-on technical execution, spending roughly half the time contributing directly to design, implementation, and verification. The ideal person balances rigorous validation standards with rapid iteration, effectively bridging classical computer vision with modern deep learning to secure space capabilities for the U.S. and its Allies.
What you will do
- Provide technical direction and review designs for world model architectures, generative AI systems, multi-target tracking algorithms, and edge deployment strategies.
- Define and own the team roadmap, prioritizing work across synthetic video generation, sensor fusion, camera calibration, and edge-deployed object detection.
- Build, mentor, and lead a team of perception and AI engineers through hiring, performance management, and career development.
- Maintain technical credibility by spending approximately half of working time on hands-on design, implementation, and verification.
- Define perception AI standards and validation approaches that bridge synthetic data, simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and operational acceptance.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with flight software, hardware, autonomy, and simulation teams to manage dependencies and deliver flight-ready systems.
- Communicate progress, risks, and blockers to leadership while driving continuous process improvements.
What you need
- Master's degree in computer science, robotics, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience with a Ph.D. or Bachelor's degree.
- 8+ years of professional experience in computer vision, robotics, autonomous systems, or perception AI engineering.
- At least 4 to 5 years of people management experience leading teams of 4 or more engineers.
- Demonstrated track record of building, growing, and developing high-performing engineering teams.
- Strong technical foundation in perception AI with depth in synthetic data generation, multi-object tracking, sensor fusion, or edge AI deployment.
- Experience with resource-constrained perception AI deployment, real-time vision systems, or aerospace applications operating under strict compute, power, and thermal budgets.
- U.S. Citizenship and eligibility for a government security clearance.
Nice to have
- Prior work with synthetic data generation, generative AI for photorealistic video synthesis, rendering pipelines like Blender or Unreal, domain randomization, and sim-to-real transfer.
- Experience with world models, physics-based simulation, sensor phenomenology frameworks, and multi-modal data synthesis.
- Experience with deep learning for perception AI including object detection like YOLO and Faster R-CNN, classification, semantic segmentation, and vision transformers.
Benefits
- 100% company-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents, with HSA/HRA options.
- Flexible Time Off (FTO) for exempt employees, accrued PTO of up to 25 days for non-exempt employees, plus 12 paid holidays, parental leave, and sick leave.
- Daily catered lunch and unlimited snacks for in-office employees.
- 401(k) retirement plan, fitness reimbursement, and Dog Fridays.
- Equity participation included as part of the total compensation package.
