The Staff Frontier Agents Engineer position at Scale AI is based in San Francisco, California or New York, New York, where the professional will architect and deploy production-ready AI systems for strategic enterprise customers. This role suits an experienced software engineer with a strong background in distributed systems who enjoys solving complex infrastructure and artificial intelligence challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Architect and deploy production AI systems integrating seamlessly into complex enterprise environments, cloud platforms, and internal APIs.
Design scalable agent architectures combining LLMs, retrieval, memory, tools, and structured knowledge into reliable production workflows.
Build robust integrations allowing AI agents to interact with customer systems safely while meeting security, governance, and compliance requirements.
Develop agent runtimes, orchestration frameworks, context pipelines, execution services, and tool integrations that power production AI systems.
Operationalize modern AI quality systems, including evaluation harnesses, offline benchmarks, regression suites, and LLM-as-a-Judge.
Partner directly with enterprise customers to translate ambiguous problems into scalable production AI architectures and serve as the primary technical advisor.

Requirements

8+ years of software engineering experience with strong fundamentals in distributed systems, data structures, algorithms, and system design.
Strong Python programming skills with experience building production software.
Experience building or deploying AI-powered applications using modern LLM APIs, agent frameworks, MCP, retrieval systems, or vector databases.
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP alongside modern production infrastructure.
Strong problem-solving abilities to navigate ambiguous technical requirements and rapidly iterate toward production solutions.
Excellent communication skills to work directly with enterprise engineering teams and lead architecture discussions.

Nice to Have

Experience deploying production AI agents, autonomous systems, distributed systems, APIs, or large-scale backend services.
Familiarity with cloud-native infrastructure, Docker, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code, and CI/CD pipelines.
Experience with evaluation frameworks, LLM observability, regression testing, tracing, and AI monitoring mechanisms.
Background working directly with enterprise customers to translate complex technical requirements into scalable systems.

Salary and Benefits

Base salary range for full-time positions in San Francisco and New York is $252,000 to $315,000 USD.
Eligible for equity-based compensation subject to Board of Director approval.
