Role Overview

Shift Technology is hiring a Staff AI Engineer to act as the technical anchor for artificial intelligence capabilities. The professional in this position will work alongside product leaders, data scientists, and software engineers to design, build, and deploy production-grade intelligence systems. Responsibilities include shaping engineering strategy, prototyping modern LLM architectures, and bridging advanced algorithms with robust backend microservices.

Key Responsibilities

Design, prototype, and build production-ready agentic workflows, custom orchestration layers, and tool-calling integrations using modern frameworks
Move artificial intelligence prototypes into robust, production-grade microservices on Azure to ensure scalability and low latency
Experiment with and integrate emerging paradigms into the production stack, including Model Context Protocol, advanced retrieval-augmented generation patterns, vector pipelines, and structured outputs
Establish operational frameworks for experiment tracking, evaluations, prompt engineering, latency optimization, token budget governance, and model observability
Act as a technical mentor for agent-focused engineering squads by leading design reviews and setting coding standards
Benchmark new models, tools, and architectures to translate practical breakthroughs into value-driving implementations

Requirements

Practical expertise in modern generative artificial intelligence and large language model ecosystems combined with backend software engineering skills
Hands-on experience building with agentic frameworks such as Microsoft Agent Framework, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, OpenAI Agents SDK, or custom solutions
Working knowledge of Model Context Protocol, function calling, structured outputs, and complex retrieval-augmented generation pipelines
Experience with evaluation frameworks, prompt engineering, tracing, context window optimization, and token governance in production environments
High proficiency in Python programming paired with strong object-oriented programming experience
Background in building and scaling backend microservices and REST endpoints in enterprise cloud environments like Azure
Familiarity with vector databases, relational databases, event-driven patterns, and containerization tools such as Docker and Kubernetes
