Role Overview

The Emerging Team at Pendo is building AI products from the ground up to transform how software teams understand their users. As a Sr. Software Engineer (AI), the focus is on creating applied AI systems, handling model deployment, and ensuring reliability at scale. Operating within the New York office, the engineer works closely with product and design partners to frame problems correctly and deliver impactful user experiences.

Key Responsibilities

Design and construct applied AI systems, encompassing retrieval-augmented generation pipelines, agentic workflows, and LLM-powered features from prototype to production.
Make principled technical choices regarding prompting, fine-tuning, and tool selection, clearly communicating these tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Instrument and evaluate model outputs rigorously by setting up evaluation frameworks, catching hallucinations early, and implementing robust guardrails.
Own the production lifecycle of AI models, covering deployment, monitoring, latency optimization, cost management, and reliability.
Contribute across the full stack on backend and frontend systems to deliver complete user-facing AI products.
Partner with product managers and designers to define problems before writing code and focus on what should be built.
Stay informed on research and tooling developments, including transformers, diffusion architectures, and orchestration frameworks.

Requirements

Hands-on expertise in building and launching LLM-powered systems, including retrieval-augmented generation, tool use, and agent orchestration.
Strong system design skills to choose appropriate architectures, identify failure modes, and manage tradeoffs throughout the product lifecycle.
Experience owning technical quality by establishing standards, reviewing code, and improving shared infrastructure.
Command of model evaluation, including creating evaluation suites, understanding bias-variance tradeoffs, and mitigating hallucinations.
Familiarity with modern model architectures like transformers and diffusion models.
Production AI experience managing deployment, monitoring pipelines, and optimizing cost, latency, and reliability.
Full-stack capabilities across backend and frontend environments.
Excellent communication skills for explaining complex technical topics to engineers, product managers, and executives.
Strong product thinking and the ability to evaluate whether a feature should be built.

Nice to Have

Background in fine-tuning foundation models with a clear perspective on when it outperforms prompting.
Familiarity with AI safety, guardrails, and responsible deployment.
Experience constructing multi-step reasoning systems using LangChain, LlamaIndex, or custom orchestration frameworks.
Experience working in SaaS or product analytics settings where user behavior data shapes AI design.
Prior involvement in launching a net-new team or product line.
