Role Overview

OpenAI seeks a Software Engineer for the Monetization team to design and develop systems that transform merchant product feeds into relevant, reliably delivered ads. Located in San Francisco and Mountain View, this position requires building across the full ads lifecycle, from catalog ingestion to serving ads at scale in ChatGPT.

Key Responsibilities

Design and build pipelines that ingest, validate, normalize, and refresh merchant product feeds to keep catalog data accurate.
Develop scalable catalog storage and indexing systems to make large inventories searchable.
Build search and retrieval systems to identify relevant products across merchant catalogs.
Partner with machine learning teams to connect product retrieval with ranking models through dependable serving infrastructure.
Engineer low-latency, high-throughput ads delivery systems with strong reliability guarantees.
Design real-time event pipelines and distributed storage to support catalog freshness and serving decisions.
Build observability and quality controls to detect feed errors, stale inventory, and serving issues.
Define technical direction and drive complex projects from prototyping to production deployment.

Requirements

Extensive experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems with ownership of product ads retrieval, ranking infrastructure, or delivery.
Understanding of merchant feeds and shopping systems, including how catalog quality and freshness affect ads performance.
Background in building systems for shopping or product ads at platforms like Amazon, Google Shopping, or YouTube.
Alternatively, experience at Senior Staff-level scope or above leading large-scale catalogs, search and indexing platforms, or ads serving.
Capability to build low-latency, high-throughput services and data pipelines with strict reliability requirements.
