About this role
Slow build pipelines, flaky continuous integration runs, and cumbersome deployment steps drain engineering hours and delay the delivery of fixes to ChatGPT users. Addressing this friction is the core objective for the ChatGPT Velocity team, which owns the end-to-end developer and deploy loop for ChatGPT-facing services.
An experienced infrastructure engineer is needed to make ChatGPT development dramatically faster and more reliable. Daily work spans local development, build systems, continuous integration, deployment infrastructure, test ownership, and production safety signals. Success requires diagnosing messy distributed systems, reading developer pain signals, building reliable automation, and balancing velocity with production safety.
What you will do
- Reduce local development startup and iteration latency for ChatGPT engineers.
- Improve Bazel and build performance across local machines, devboxes, and continuous integration environments.
- Enhance continuous integration reliability and merge throughput by minimizing unrelated failures and flaky tests.
- Build automated agents that assist pull requests with rebasing, conflict resolution, and triage.
- Make deployment pipelines more self-healing to reduce the need for manual oversight.
- Establish lightweight metrics to measure changes in commit-to-prod latency and developer-reported pain.
What you need
- Bring strong experience with large-scale developer infrastructure, build systems, CI/CD, deployment systems, or production reliability.
- Demonstrate the ability to debug across local machines, devboxes, remote caches, monorepos, and distributed deploy pipelines.
- Show comfort with systems such as Bazel, Buildkite, Kubernetes, Temporal, Python or TypeScript services, and GitHub workflows.
- Communicate effectively across teams to turn ambiguous friction reports into clear metrics and shipped fixes.
Nice to have
- Experience improving developer experience in a very large monorepo.
- Experience with remote execution, remote caching, hermetic builds, or cache reproducibility.
- Experience designing CI quarantine, test ownership, merge queue, or auto-revert systems.
- Experience with progressive delivery, canary, preview, or stable deploy pipelines and synthetics.
- Experience building agent-assisted developer workflows such as automated PR babysitting.
