About this role

Remote (US) is the location for this remote software engineering position focusing on client-side AI products at OpenRouter. This role suits an independent engineer with a strong background in developer tools who wants to build terminal, desktop, and messaging integrations for large language models.

Role Overview

OpenRouter seeks a software engineer for the Ori team to develop client-side applications that bring large language models into desktops, terminals, and messaging platforms like Slack. Operating within a small team led by a co-founder, the position involves hands-on individual contribution with minimal process, collaborating closely with design, product, and platform engineering groups.

Key Responsibilities

Construct and release features across all Ori touchpoints, including the command line interface and harness integrations.
Enable model flexibility across various harnesses through seamless switching, provider fallbacks, tailored prompt settings, and organizational guardrails.
Develop the underlying agent runtime, covering sandboxed execution, secret management, session handling, and shared agent skills.
Transition agents from local machines to cloud environments with version-controlled, auditable state management.
Maintain end-to-end quality across installation, user experience, reliability, observability, and evaluations by heavily dogfooding internal tools.
Communicate product gaps back to the core API and SDK teams to improve the broader ecosystem primitives.

Requirements

Minimum of five years of professional experience releasing production software with ownership of developer tools, command line interfaces, or agent infrastructure.
Regular familiarity with coding agents alongside specific opinions regarding agent loops, tool integrations, and harnesses.
Thorough understanding of internal agent mechanics including tool calling, context window management, evaluations, and performance tradeoffs.
Strong systems architecture knowledge concerning safe agent execution, process isolation, and multi-user reliability.
High agency and action-oriented mindset for direct user interaction, rapid prototyping, and iterative development.
Refined product taste for developer tools with close attention to early user experience details.

Nice to Have

Prior experience building or maintaining open-source developer tools, command line interfaces, or agent harnesses.
Background working with multi-agent frameworks, agent memory systems, evaluation tools, Slack applications, or native macOS applications.
Familiarity with AI tooling side projects or prior usage of OpenRouter and Ori.
