About this role

Scale AI is currently hiring a Software Engineer, Frontier AI Infrastructure for the Public Sector Engineering team located in San Francisco, St. Louis, New York, or Washington, DC. This role suits technical professionals who want to own the model inference layer and build secure backend systems for government and public sector clients.

Role Overview

As a Software Engineer, Frontier AI Infrastructure, the focus centers on managing the model inference layer, debugging cutting-edge AI tools, monitoring networking, tracking usage metrics, and troubleshooting latency. This position requires working directly on the frontlines with cloud vendors and customers to resolve platform issues and deliver critical contracts. Collaboration with product teams ensures proactive integration testing to catch issues early and prevent failures upstream.

Key Responsibilities

Design and implement secure, scalable backend solutions for public sector clients using cloud-native AI infrastructure.
Own specific systems and services, establish long-term health goals, and enhance surrounding component reliability.
Re-architect the technology stack to operate within compliant, restrictive, or air-gapped environments by creating swappable components for authentication, storage, and logging.
Partner with product management to develop integration tests that shift the focus from reactive infrastructure debugging to proactive failure prevention.
Engage actively with stakeholders and customers to understand requirements and contribute to the public sector product roadmap.
Support work directly from the designated office locations three to four days per week.

Requirements

Hold an active secret security clearance with the ability and willingness to upgrade to TS/SCI with CI Poly.
Ability to work on-site 3-4 days a week from the Washington, San Francisco, New York, or St. Louis office.

Nice to Have

Experience with full-stack development, covering front-end and back-end web frameworks, programming languages, and databases.
Familiarity with cloud-native technologies, containerization using Docker, and container orchestration with Kubernetes.
Knowledge of cloud platforms like AWS, Azure, and GCP for deploying applications.
Background in federal compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, Cloud SRG, and STIG Benchmarks.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and adaptability skills.

Salary and Benefits

Eligible roles at Scale AI receive a comprehensive compensation package that includes base salary, equity-based compensation subject to board approval, and benefits. Base salary varies by geographic location and career level determined during the interview process. For full-time positions in San Francisco and New York, the base salary ranges from $184,000 to $259,440 USD. For Washington, DC, the range is $165,600 to $233,496 USD, and for St. Louis, the range is $138,000 to $194,580 USD. Standard benefits include comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage, retirement plans, a learning and development stipend, a commuter stipend, and generous paid time off.
