Software engineer, connectors & MCP
About this role
Bridging enterprise systems and generative artificial intelligence securely requires robust connectors and MCP frameworks that facilitate reliable agent workflows. Writer needs a software engineer to design and deliver secure, scalable integration platforms that connect disparate business systems and power mission-critical automation. Operating out of San Francisco, New York City, or Seattle hubs on a hybrid schedule, this team member will own backend service design for high-throughput, low-latency APIs.
Working alongside product and cross-functional engineering leaders, the incoming engineer will shape technical strategy, define authentication boundaries, and guide production reliability. Ideal candidates possess strong backend fundamentals, hands-on experience building AI integration layers, and a track record of leading through technical ambiguity.
What you will do
- Design and deliver secure, scalable AI integration platforms that connect enterprise systems and power mission-critical automation.
- Contribute to the design and evolution of the AI integration client ecosystem, defining how AI applications securely connect to external tools and data sources.
- Own backend service design for high-throughput, low-latency APIs that enable reliable agent workflows and complex cross-system orchestration.
- Set technical direction for identity, authentication, and trust boundaries across integrations while balancing developer velocity with security.
- Partner with product and engineering leaders to shape roadmaps, define technical strategy, and translate business goals into platform capabilities.
- Lead production excellence through a metrics-first reliability strategy, defining SLOs and SLAs, maturing observability, and driving performance optimization.
- Raise the engineering bar through architecture reviews, design standards, rigorous testing strategies, and mentorship of team members.
What you need
- Five or more years of software engineering experience building and operating production backend systems using TypeScript, Deno, Node.js, or Bun.
- Strong experience designing and shipping API-driven platform services and distributed systems including microservices and event-driven patterns.
- Practical expertise building AI integration layers such as MCP clients or servers, tool orchestration, and external API connectors.
- Deep hands-on knowledge of authentication and security patterns for third-party integrations including OAuth2, OIDC, and secret management.
- Proven cloud-native experience on AWS, GCP, or Azure with containerized workloads, CI/CD, and production operations.
- Strong background in observability and reliability engineering including service metrics, alerting, and incident response.
- Solid backend fundamentals in modern server frameworks and data systems with the ability to choose the right tool for the system.

The compensation ranges from $132K to $240K, including offers for equity, and is scaled to match experience, expertise, and role scope.
