About this role

The engineering team at Writer builds advanced AI-driven agent systems designed to execute autonomous workflows, orchestrate multi-step tasks, and expand human capacity across enterprise applications. Engineers in this group focus on designing, building, and scaling next-generation AI agents that integrate deeply with enterprise data and services to solve complex real-world challenges.

Day-to-day work involves creating secure, scalable agent-driven services, developing high-throughput APIs, and integrating backend data stores, vector databases, and external APIs. Practitioners collaborate closely with product managers, AI researchers, data engineers, and user experience teams to turn high-level agent concepts into production-ready software systems.

This opportunity suits pragmatic builders and scalers who thrive in fast-paced environments and possess a solid background in distributed systems and backend Python development. Candidates who enjoy tackling architectural design decisions, participating in code reviews, and maintaining operational reliability across complex AI workflows will find a strong alignment here.

What you will do

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable and secure agent-driven services that autonomously accomplish tasks using modern AI frameworks.
  • Develop robust infrastructure and high-throughput APIs focused on core agent capabilities including memory, communication, and decision logic.
  • Integrate agent functionalities with backend services, data stores, vector databases, search systems, and external APIs.
  • Collaborate with product, research, data, and UX teams to translate complex agent use cases into production-ready software.
  • Ensure system reliability, monitoring, and observability across all agent components through metrics, logging, and CI/CD practices.
  • Contribute to architectural design decisions and participate in rigorous code reviews to maintain high quality and maintainability.

What you need

  • Bring at least 3 years of professional software engineering experience with strong production proficiency in Python.
  • Demonstrate native agentic coding proficiency through the daily use of platforms such as Cursor and Claude Code.
  • Build distributed systems, microservices, or complex backend APIs that support AI and agent workflows.
  • Apply expertise in integrating AI models, agent frameworks, vector databases, and large context reasoning services.
  • Understand agent orchestration patterns, state management, and asynchronous workflows.
  • Utilize cloud platforms, containerization tools like Docker and Kubernetes, and operational engineering best practices.

Nice to have

  • Past work on AI agents that coordinate multi-step actions, reasoning, or autonomous decision-making loops
  • Contributions to open-source agent toolkits or SDKs
  • Experience with frontend technologies like React and TypeScript for tooling around agent management interfaces

Benefits

  • Generous PTO plus company holidays
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your family
  • Paid parental leave for all parents (16 weeks)
  • Fertility and family planning support
  • Health savings account for eligible plans with company contribution
  • Annual work-life stipends for wellness and learning development
