About this role

The Senior Software Engineer, Internal Fraud Platform role at Cloudflare is a hybrid position focused on building foundational infrastructure to protect the company from abuse and fraudulent activities. This opportunity suits an experienced software engineer who wants to drive 0-to-1 platform development and partner closely with data science teams.

Role Overview

Cloudflare is searching for its first software engineer to join the Internal Fraud Platform team. This group handles issues such as payment fraud, chargebacks, account takeovers, fraudulent signups, and trial abuse. The founding engineer acts as the vital bridge between internal Cloudflare systems and fraud detection capabilities, designing the event ingestion pipelines, scoring services, and specialized investigation tools for analysts.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate services and pipelines that ingest fraud-related events from internal systems like billing, support, and signups, and route decisions accordingly.
Partner with data scientists and machine learning engineers to expose necessary event data and contextual features for model scoring, and integrate decisions back into operational pipelines.
Create internal tools and workflows enabling Trust and Safety, Support, and Finance analysts to investigate flagged accounts and take action.
Own projects end-to-end from problem definition through design, rollout, and operation with minimal oversight.
Build fault-tolerant, reliable systems that handle high event volumes and retries without dropping or duplicating critical data.
Help establish the architecture patterns, tooling choices, and engineering standards for a growing team.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Billing/Fintech, Support, and Trust and Safety teams to turn fraud vectors into technical requirements.

Requirements

Five or more years of professional software engineering experience or equivalent practical background.
Experience building and operating production distributed systems or backend services.
Experience designing and building data or event pipelines utilizing tools like Kafka or Pub/Sub.
Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, service security, and API standards such as OAuth, JWT, or OpenAPI.
Working knowledge of SQL, relational databases like MySQL or PostgreSQL, and data modeling.
Comfort owning ambiguous, 0-to-1 problems with limited existing infrastructure.
Strong troubleshooting, project ownership, and cross-functional communication abilities.

Nice to Have

Experience working in payments, risk, trust and safety, or fraud engineering.
Familiarity with feature engineering and machine learning serving concepts.
Experience with transactional systems, subscriptions, or billing platforms.
Background in building internal dashboards or tools for non-engineering stakeholders.
