About this role

Role Overview

The Senior Software Engineer II role at Virta Health is a remote position focused on building and evolving the data engagement platform that transforms partner and internal data into eligibility decisions and campaign-ready audiences. This opportunity suits an experienced backend professional with a strong ownership mindset who wants to combine technical challenge with real-world impact in digital health.

Key Responsibilities

Design and own explicit data contracts, processing semantics, identity resolution, audience attributes, and field persistence across the data lifecycle.
Build end-to-end observability and reconciliation to explain source record transformations, data freshness, deduplication, and historical state repairs.
Lead technical discovery and delivery for Member Marketing and Coverage Eligibility in partnership with Product, data teams, and external partners.
Translate evolving audience and workflow requirements into reusable platform capabilities that separate business policy from technical implementation.
Ensure correctness and auditability in regulated workflows, providing provenance, consent controls, rollbacks, and data safety safeguards.
Modernize legacy, file-based processes into well-contracted, event-driven integrations equipped with strong observability, resilience, and security.
Own systems end-to-end from architecture through operations to drive reliability and maintainability.
Apply an experimental Build-Measure-Learn mindset while utilizing AI-assisted tooling to improve speed and quality without sacrificing correctness.

Requirements

Bring typically 10 or more years of software engineering experience with a track record of building and operating scalable, reliable backend systems in production.
Experience designing data-intensive systems where correctness relies on explicit schemas, identity resolution, incremental processing, idempotency, lineage, and reconciliation.
Demonstrate a proactive, high-agency, and autonomous ownership-first mindset to navigate ambiguity and drive solutions independently.
Proven technical leadership capability to establish engineering standards across team boundaries, mentor senior engineers, and create technical roadmaps.
Practical background working with B2B or partner-facing data systems, including file-based integrations, real-time exchanges, or partner APIs.
Sound judgment regarding the safe and effective use of AI-assisted tooling for engineering velocity alongside deterministic controls for safety.
Strong collaboration and communication skills suited for cross-functional environments involving Product, data, and external partners.

Nice to Have

Experience working within healthcare data domains like eligibility, claims, EHR, or member marketing in regulated or partner-integrated environments.
Familiarity with customer-data, marketing-automation, or audience-activation platforms such as Braze, Segment, or Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
Prior success modernizing legacy data flows from SFTP or file-based systems to API- or event-driven architectures.
Knowledge of data quality frameworks, lineage tracking, or automated anomaly detection.
Demonstrated use of AI or LLM-based tooling for test generation, documentation, data mapping, or observability.
Experience driving change and influencing stakeholders across teams without formal authority.
