About this role

MaintainX is seeking a Senior Software Developer for the Search team to design and build end-to-end search and retrieval platforms. This full-time remote opportunity based in Toronto is ideal for an experienced engineer passionate about distributed systems and information retrieval.

Role Overview

In this role, the engineer will own indexing pipelines, ranking systems, and AI-facing query layers. The position involves partnering with product and domain experts to model search functionality across core entities like assets, work orders, and procedures to guarantee high-relevance results. Responsibilities also include operating distributed systems and driving architectural decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and optimize end-to-end search and retrieval platforms from scratch to production.
Partner with domain experts to ensure high-relevance results across core entities such as work orders, assets, and procedures.
Deliver fast iterations, launch early versions, gather feedback, and continuously improve the system.
Operate and scale distributed systems under real-world production loads, ensuring high reliability and performance.
Drive key architectural decisions that balance system correctness, long-term maintainability, and performance.
Maintain and own seamless integrations between search infrastructure and upstream data sources.
Explore vector retrieval, semantic search, and AI-enhanced relevance using modern machine learning tools.
Participate in on-call duties, which are currently limited to business hours.

Requirements

Extensive hands-on experience designing, building, and operating production-grade search systems end-to-end.
Demonstrated background working with indexing, query execution, relevance tuning, and infrastructure using tools like Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Solr, or Lucene.
Solid understanding of retrieval strategies, chunking, and embeddings.
Familiarity with search-specific tuning concepts such as BM25, analyzers, cluster health, shard sizing, and relevance optimization.
Ability to take systems from implementation to deployment, working fluidly across backend services and data pipelines.
Expert proficiency in written and spoken English to lead cross-team platform engineering managers and present technical priorities to executives.

Nice to Have

Experience evaluating and improving search relevance via quantitative metrics and qualitative analysis.
Prior background shipping AI-powered or LLM-integrated backend systems.
Familiarity with modern AI productivity tools like Cursor, Copilot, or GPT.
Understanding of multi-tenancy architecture and data security, including secure index partitioning, field-level access controls, and ACLs.
Experience establishing success metrics and building system observability to monitor usage and impact.
