Cohere is hiring a full-time Senior Research Engineer for the Modeling department based in New York. This role suits an experienced software engineer and data professional who wants to build robust safety tooling and data pipelines for frontier artificial intelligence models.

Role Overview

As a Senior Research Engineer focusing on Safety Tooling and Data, the successful candidate will help develop secure and reliable artificial intelligence models. The primary responsibility involves building tools for simple data synthesis, analysis, and management across real and synthetic datasets used in model training and evaluation. Working closely with research scientists and engineers, the person in this position will create efficient pipelines, establish technical standards, and drive collaborative modeling decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Design and build robust data pipeline tooling allowing for frequent and low-friction data generation and annotation.
Create cohesive data infrastructure that supports continuous parallel operation alongside model experimentation.
Establish standardized processes for data validation, analysis, and overall improvement of training and evaluation datasets.
Cooperate closely with the machine learning modeling team to align data capabilities with evolving experimental needs.
Maintain opinionated, well-documented technical solutions that serve as team standards.
Develop systematic analysis frameworks to identify incoming data sources and benchmark coverage gaps.

Requirements

Extremely strong software engineering capabilities.
Strong statistical skills alongside experience evaluating scientific experiments related to model performance and data collection.
Demonstrated ability to independently own complex technical projects from initial conception through to final deployment.
Opinionated approach to technical architecture with the ability to make principled, efficient decisions.
Clear understanding of machine learning data requirements and the intersection between data engineering and modeling workflows.

Skills and Tools

Proficiency in programming languages such as Python.
Experience with machine learning frameworks including PyTorch.
Expertise in Big Data Analytics tools such as BigQuery and SQL.

Salary and Benefits

Annual salary range between $250,000 and $535,000 CAD.
Weekly lunch stipend of $75 or equivalent local currency.
