This role suits an individual who is fluent in both design and engineering, comfortable defining component behavior in Figma and shipping code to npm. The position is based in the United States and involves building and maintaining the Waypoint design system.
Role Overview
Cohere is hiring a Design Engineer in the United States to build and maintain Waypoint, the company's design system, across the Figma library and production codebase. The professional in this position will take direct ownership of the Figma library structure, variants, tokens, and documentation while contributing to core component packages, token pipelines, and synchronization tooling.
Key Responsibilities
Own and evolve the Figma library for Waypoint by managing component structure, variants, properties, and documentation to maintain a reliable source of truth.
Build and maintain core Waypoint components by contributing directly to component packages alongside the design engineering team.
Work across the token pipeline to keep design tokens in Figma and their code representations, such as CSS custom properties and Tailwind configuration, tightly synced.
Partner with product designers to translate new patterns into system components and collaborate with product engineers to ensure smooth component adoption.
Define and refine workflows and tooling connecting Figma and code, including sync scripts, plugins, and documentation sites.
Write clear documentation and usage guidance to support system scaling.
Participate in system architecture decisions regarding component creation, extension, versioning, packaging, and consistency.
Help shape the evolution of Waypoint to serve AI models by structuring components, tokens, and patterns for legibility to AI systems.
Requirements
Own and evolve the Figma library for Waypoint: component structure, variants, properties, and documentation, so it stays a reliable source of truth for design teams.
Build and maintain core Waypoint components, contributing directly to our component packages alongside the design engineering team.
Work across our token pipeline, keeping design tokens in Figma and their code representations (CSS custom properties, Tailwind config) tightly synced.
Partner with product designers to translate new patterns into system components, and with product engineers to make sure those components are easy to adopt correctly.
Help define and refine the workflows and tooling that connect Figma and code (sync scripts, plugins, documentation sites) rather than relying on manual handoff.
Write clear documentation and usage guidance so the system scales without you being the bottleneck.
Weigh in on system architecture decisions: when to add a new component versus extend an existing one, how to version and package changes, how to keep the system consistent as it grows.
Help shape how Waypoint evolves to serve a third consumer beyond designers and engineers: the model itself.
Nice to Have
Experience building or contributing to design-to-code sync tooling like Figma plugins, token pipelines, or MCP-based workflows.
Familiarity with accessibility standards including WCAG for component integration.
Experience packaging and versioning component libraries for multiple consuming teams using npm scoped packages, semver, and changelogs.
Exposure to multi-platform design systems work such as iOS SwiftUI, Android Jetpack Compose, or Style Dictionary.
Experience in an AI native product environment or genuine interest in AI-driven design systems.
