Role Overview

Inworld operates as a research lab and inference provider building modular APIs and first-party speech models for high-volume, realtime workloads. The Senior / Lead Research Scientist will tackle ambiguous problems, design experiments, and take research all the way to production. Candidates will collaborate daily with US-based leadership and engineering teams, requiring professional fluency in both written and spoken English.

Key Responsibilities

Own the full research lifecycle, from framing core questions and running experiments to shipping tangible results.
Investigate and develop foundation models, evaluation loops, and frontier topics such as multimodal systems and autonomous agents.
Build and analyze failure points, model quality, and test-time compute frameworks.
Design rigorous evaluation mechanisms as primary research products rather than routine launch checkboxes.
Build paths forward without explicit roadmaps, thriving in environments with minimal process theater and fast iterations.

Requirements

Professional fluency in written and spoken English.
Ability to demonstrate past work through AI side projects, open-source contributions, or published research at venues like NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, EMNLP, ACL, or AAAI.
Experience or foundational knowledge in training foundation models, reinforcement learning, evaluation benchmarks, or frontier AI topics.
A proven bias for impact, preferring real-world shipping over purely academic outcomes.
Practical experience equivalent to a PhD in Machine Learning or Natural Language Processing, or demonstrated capability through self-directed building and experimentation.
