About this role

Role Overview

The Senior Applied Scientist at MaintainX is a full-time, remote position based in Canada focusing on the intelligence layer behind the Parts Agent on the Inventory and Enterprise Asset Management roadmap. This role suits a quantitative professional with extensive experience in machine learning, optimization, and Python service engineering who wants to build decision models for enterprise maintenance teams. MaintainX operates as a mobile-first work execution platform and part of Autodesk Operations Solutions, helping frontline teams reduce unplanned downtime across millions of managed assets.

Key Responsibilities

Build and evolve optimization and machine learning models that power the Parts Agent, including reorder point prediction, demand forecasting, economic order quantity, and multi-site stock balancing.
Implement advanced inventory intelligence such as criticality-weighted safety stock, vendor lead time modeling, proactive stockout alerts, and substitution graph traversal.
Develop and maintain Python APIs and tools that connect these models to Generative AI agent workflows through tool calling and structured inputs and outputs.
Collaborate closely with product management and design to transform complex supply chain challenges into practical models that operators find useful.
Engage directly with real enterprise users, design partners, and pilot deployments to gather feedback and refine model performance.
Support the surrounding Python service by ensuring high reliability, performance, observability, and rigorous testing.
Integrate parts intelligence smoothly into the wider product ecosystem by analyzing historical purchasing and usage data.

Requirements

Five or more years of professional data science or software engineering experience focused on shipping machine learning, forecasting, or optimization systems to users.
Strong expertise in at least one optimization paradigm, such as mixed-integer linear programming, linear programming, simulation, or stochastic programming, alongside demand forecasting experience.
Proficient Python service engineering skills encompassing async development, APIs, profiling, testing, and observability for end-to-end production ownership.
Academic background with a solid undergraduate foundation in supply chain, statistics, industrial engineering, operations research, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
Demonstrated history of iterating on data-driven systems based on direct user feedback and real-world rejections.
Product-focused delivery mindset centered on operator outcomes and comfort operating in ambiguous environments.
Familiarity with Generative AI tooling, including Large Language Model prompt design for constrained generation, structured outputs, and tool calling.

Nice to Have

Previous experience at a product company scaling procurement, supply chain, or inventory management optimization.
Background in learning-augmented optimization utilizing consumption or purchasing history to estimate constraint weights, priors, or lead times.
Domain knowledge in maintenance, repair, and operations inventory, manufacturing supply chains, field service logistics, or spare parts management.
Prior tech-lead experience or an interest in growing into a technical leadership capacity on the team.
