Role Overview

The Senior Applied AI Engineer will design and implement production artificial intelligence systems that automate healthcare workflows at abby-care. Based in San Francisco, this hybrid position requires four days per week in person. The engineer reports to the Applied AI Leader and manages projects from initial problem definition to production deployment.

Key Responsibilities

Lead end-to-end AI initiatives from workflow discovery and technical design through production deployment and iteration.

Develop reliable agents and copilots that reason over structured and unstructured data while executing multi-step workflows.

Design systems that manage operational edge cases by combining models, retrieval, rules, state machines, and human oversight.

Create representative datasets, evaluation harnesses, production tracing, and systematic error-analysis processes.

Collaborate with product, design, clinical, operations, analytics, and platform teams to integrate artificial intelligence into complete workflows.

Raise the technical bar by contributing reusable platform capabilities, shaping architecture, and mentoring engineers.

Requirements

Five or more years of professional experience in software engineering, machine learning, or applied artificial intelligence.

Practical background in building and operating artificial intelligence or machine learning systems in production environments.

Hands-on familiarity with language models, retrieval systems, structured generation, model APIs, or agent architectures.

Solid software engineering fundamentals covering backend systems, APIs, data modeling, testing, and observability.

Proven ability to design evaluations and analyze the behavior of probabilistic systems.

Experience taking ownership of ambiguous problems and communicating complex technical concepts to various partners.

Permanent residency in or willingness to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Nice to Have

Experience with model fine-tuning, post-training, reinforcement learning, synthetic data generation, multimodal models, document intelligence, knowledge graphs, ontologies, workflow engines, or state machines.

Background working in healthcare, fintech, insurance, or other regulated and operations-intensive environments.
