Role Overview

Abby Care is hiring an Applied AI Engineer for a full-time hybrid position located in San Francisco, California, requiring four days per week in person. The role reports to the Director, Applied AI and focuses on developing systems that manage home care operations, from intake to compliance and billing. The position involves working across the full development lifecycle, including prototyping, dataset preparation, evaluation, and production deployment.

Key Responsibilities

Build artificial intelligence-powered products and automation, including agents, copilots, and intelligent workflows for caregivers, clinicians, and operational teams.

Develop production systems such as backend services, APIs, data pipelines, integrations, and reusable artificial intelligence components.

Work with complex healthcare information by extracting, retrieving, and reasoning over clinical documents, conversations, and operational records.

Evaluate and improve system quality through representative datasets, performance measurement, failure analysis, and evidence-based optimization of models, prompts, retrieval, and tools.

Learn directly from users and operations by collaborating with Product, Design, Clinical, and Operations teams to understand workflows and iterate based on production feedback.

Contribute to engineering foundations by writing maintainable, tested code and building shared capabilities for orchestration, tool use, structured outputs, monitoring, tracing, and evaluation.

Requirements

Minimum of 2 years of professional software engineering, machine learning, or Applied AI experience, or equivalent demonstrated ability.

Strong programming skills and software engineering fundamentals.

Experience building applications using language models, machine-learning models, or modern artificial intelligence application programming interfaces.

Familiarity with backend development, application programming interfaces, data processing, testing, and production software systems.

Ability to structure ambiguous problems, test assumptions, and iterate based on evidence.

Interest in building evaluations and understanding system successes and failures.

Strong ownership, curiosity, and willingness to engage directly with users and operational workflows.

Clear written and verbal communication skills.

Must reside in or be willing to permanently relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Nice to Have

Experience with Python, agent architectures, retrieval-augmented generation, document intelligence, multimodal models, structured generation, model evaluation, monitoring, or prompt optimization.

Experience in healthcare, fintech, insurance, another regulated environment, a startup, or an operations-intensive business.
