Role Overview

The Product Engineer role at Cognition focuses on building tools that meet rising user expectations for AI-driven software. This position suits engineers who can make independent product decisions, solve complex technical challenges, and ship polished experiences across IDE, web, and CLI surfaces without relying on traditional product managers or designers.

Key Responsibilities

Own features from initial code creation to direct conversations with users whose feedback shapes future developments.
Craft fast, focused, and effortless interfaces across IDE, web, and CLI products.
Define new interaction patterns and conventions for developers working alongside AI agents.
Build Devin and core agent infrastructure, including the agent loop, tool use, and reliable task harnesses.
Solve difficult underlying engineering problems independently to deliver superior developer experiences.
Context-switch quickly while maintaining a consistently high quality bar across multiple product surfaces.

Requirements

Strong full-stack engineering depth paired with an innate instinct for product quality.
Genuine empathy for developer workflows, pain points, and delightful tooling.
Proficiency in Python, TypeScript, and React within complex, production-grade environments.
Independent product judgment to make sound choices without heavy processes or sign-offs.
Obsession with UX details, including micro-interactions, transitions, response times, and empty states.
A degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related technical discipline from a highly selective program.

Nice to Have

Prior experience building developer tools, IDEs, or technical products for engineers.
Relevant industry experience at a frontier AI lab, applied AI company, or developer tools organization.
