Role Overview
AlphaSense is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the design, evolution, and reliability of its global financial data extraction and normalization platform remotely in Canada. This remote position is tailored for a seasoned technical leader with over fifteen years of experience who wants to shape the future of AI-driven market intelligence systems.
Key Responsibilities
Own the complete architecture and ongoing evolution of a large-scale data extraction and normalization platform.
Design robust systems capable of processing hundreds of thousands of records from diverse sources like PDFs, HTML, APIs, and spreadsheets with high reliability.
Develop strategies to minimize human-in-the-loop validation using AI-based validation, confidence scoring, lineage tracking, and deterministic safeguards.
Establish clear system contracts for accuracy, traceability, and confidence to ensure users can track where data originates.
Balance artificial intelligence approaches with procedural and rules-based mechanisms to enhance reliability and explainability.
Identify and resolve architectural and operational bottlenecks that impact scale, accuracy, and engineering velocity.
Act as the primary technical authority to block substandard designs, redesign critical systems, and introduce new tools.
Collaborate closely with product teams and downstream consumers to define quality thresholds, service level agreements, and success metrics.
Serve as the technical escalation point for production issues, reliability failures, and systemic risks.
Mentor senior engineers, shape the internal technical culture, and contribute to long-term technical strategy while staying hands-on.
Requirements
15+ years of professional experience building and operating large-scale production software systems.
Proven track record of designing data ingestion, extraction, or processing systems at significant scale.
Deep expertise in at least one of the following areas: distributed systems, data platforms and pipelines, AI or ML-powered extraction and classification systems, or platform and infrastructure engineering.
Demonstrated ability to build trustworthy platforms that successfully merge probabilistic AI approaches with deterministic methods.
Strong comprehension of system reliability, observability, failure modes, and iterative hardening.
Experience in successfully reducing operational and human dependency overhead through advanced system design.
History of driving technical leadership across various teams without requiring formal people management responsibilities.
Comfort operating within ambiguity and establishing clarity.
Genuine passion for applying artificial intelligence responsibly to deliver scalable, high-confidence architectures.
Nice to Have
Prior experience working with document understanding, natural language processing (NLP), or financial data extraction.
Background in building provenance, data lineage, or confidence-scoring systems.
Familiarity with cloud-native architectures and modern data technology stacks.
Experience shaping or owning internal platforms utilized by multiple teams across an enterprise.
