Role Overview
The Principal Software Engineer position at AlphaSense is a senior remote opportunity designed for seasoned technologists with extensive technical backgrounds. Key Responsibilities
Take ownership of the architecture and continuous evolution of the global financial data extraction and normalization platform.
Design robust systems capable of processing massive volumes of records from diverse file formats such as PDFs, HTML files, APIs, and spreadsheets with high reliability.
Create and implement strategies that minimize reliance on human validation through the use of AI-driven validation, provenance tracking, deterministic safeguards, and confidence scoring.
Establish definitive system contracts focused on traceability, correctness, and confidence metrics.
Blend artificial intelligence methodologies with rules-based and procedural systems to maximize explainability and reliability.
Identify, address, and remediate operational and architectural bottlenecks that affect developer velocity, system accuracy, and scale.
Serve as a technical authority to prevent weak designs, redesign core systems, and introduce innovative platforms or tooling when necessary.
Collaborate closely with product teams and downstream consumers to set quality standards, success metrics, and service level agreements.
Act as the primary technical escalation contact for systemic risks, reliability failures, and production issues.
Mentor senior engineers, elevate technical culture, and guide long-term technical strategy while remaining hands-on with critical platform implementations.
Requirements
Minimum of 15 years of professional experience building and running large-scale production systems.
Proven track record of designing data processing, ingestion, or extraction systems at scale.
Deep expertise in one or more core areas including distributed systems, data platforms and pipelines, platform or infrastructure engineering, and AI or machine learning extraction systems.
Demonstrated capability to design trustworthy platforms combining deterministic and probabilistic approaches.
Comprehensive understanding of system reliability, observability, failure modes, and iterative hardening.
Past experience successfully reducing human or operational overhead through thoughtful system design.
Track record of providing technical leadership across cross-functional teams without requiring formal people management responsibilities.
Comfort navigating ambiguity and establishing clarity within complex environments.
Genuine passion for utilizing artificial intelligence responsibly to build scalable, high-confidence architectures.
Nice to Have
Practical experience working with document understanding, natural language processing, or financial data extraction.
Background in constructing provenance, lineage, or confidence-scoring mechanisms.
Familiarity with modern data stacks and cloud-native architectures.
Experience owning or shaping internal platforms utilized by multiple engineering teams.
