Mechanical Engineer, Dynamometer and Actuator Testing Infrastructure
About this role
Rigorous characterization of robotic actuators requires robust test stands and dynamometer infrastructure to safely evaluate hardware performance. The Robotics team at OpenAI develops general-purpose robotics by integrating hardware and software to explore various robotic form factors.
In this capacity, the mechanical engineer takes ownership of the physical testing apparatus, designing fixtures, load paths, guarding, and serviceable lab hardware. The person in this role transitions test infrastructure from early requirements through CAD, fabrication, assembly, and commissioning. Success requires a combination of first-principles mechanical design, practical lab skills, and close collaboration with electrical and software teams.
What you will do
- Own the mechanical architecture of dynamometer and actuator test cells, including frames, bases, and alignment strategies.
- Design dynamometer structures, actuator fixtures, load-motor mounts, couplings, and torque-reaction hardware.
- Translate test requirements into robust mechanical systems capable of evaluating torque, speed, thermal properties, and durability.
- Perform first-principles analysis and simulation for stiffness, strength, fatigue, vibration, and thermal growth.
- Build, assemble, debug, and improve test stands directly in the lab using measurement and fabrication tools.
- Develop safety systems such as guarding, containment, and pinch-point mitigation for high-energy rotating equipment.
- Manage fabrication partners and vendors for machined parts, weldments, bearings, and sensors.
What you need
- Possess a Bachelor's or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- Demonstrate experience designing mechanical systems for robotic actuator dynamometers, robotics, automation, or rotating machinery.
- Show a strong understanding of structures, load paths, shafts, bearings, couplings, fasteners, tolerances, and alignment.
- Bring proficiency with CAD and drawing release workflows such as NX, SolidWorks, or Creo.
- Have hands-on experience with assembly, machining, metrology, alignment, and troubleshooting in a lab environment.
- Be familiar with mechanical safety for rotating equipment, containment, and interlocks.
