About this role

The robotics team at OpenAI is developing general-purpose robotics to achieve artificial general intelligence in dynamic real-world environments by integrating hardware and software across various form factors. Individuals in this manufacturing engineering capacity will guide the development of processes, tooling, and prototype builds specifically for custom motors and actuators. Team members focus on stator processes, tooling fixtures, or prototype manufacturing to translate engineering designs into reliable hardware for future robotic platforms. Successful candidates combine hands-on technical troubleshooting with cross-functional collaboration alongside mechanical, electrical, and quality teams.

What you will do

  • Develop and validate stacking, winding, termination, and potting processes while establishing defect controls for consistent manufacturing results.
  • Design and deliver winding tools, assembly fixtures, inspection gauges, and bench equipment from initial CAD drawings through commissioning.
  • Plan and execute actuator prototype builds from parts readiness and work instructions through inspection, approved rework, and final assembly delivery.
  • Integrate and troubleshoot production equipment while managing operator workflows, material flow, and control interfaces.
  • Resolve manufacturing defects and bottlenecks through controlled trials and measurements to improve build time, repeatability, and yield.
  • Release clear process documentation, maintain engineering revisions, and train technicians and operators on successful build procedures.
  • Collaborate with mechanical designers to improve the manufacturability of hardware while preserving required magnetic, electrical, and safety standards.

What you need

  • Personal experience developing, building, or improving manufacturing processes, tooling, or electromechanical assemblies.
  • Ability to move comfortably between hands-on troubleshooting, technical data analysis, and working directly with technicians and suppliers.
  • Skill in using measurements and experiments to distinguish part variation, tooling problems, process settings, and operator effects.
  • Demonstrated sound judgment when choosing equipment and automation regarding production rate, flexibility, cost, safety, and maintainability.
  • Capacity to set practical build priorities, communicate blockers early, and coordinate across design, controls, test, and quality domains.

Nice to have

  • Experience with stator manufacturing processes including winding, stacking, termination, or potting
  • Background in fixture design, CAD drawings, metrology, and repeatability studies
  • Familiarity with automated assembly, inline inspection, end-of-line testing, or equipment fault recovery
  • Knowledge of sensors, PLCs, I/O systems, or industrial pneumatics
  • Interest in using AI tools to simplify repetitive engineering tasks

Benefits

  • Offers Equity
