About this role
Translating complex accounting conclusions into scalable operational procedures is the primary challenge for this hire. OpenAI Finance needs an experienced professional to bridge the gap between technical accounting policy and day-to-day financial operations. Working closely with Technical Accounting, Financial Reporting, and Controllership, this person will build robust processes for non-standard transactions such as warrants, equity-method investments, and business combinations.
Beyond transactional support, the individual will advise a wide array of internal stakeholders including Legal, Tax, Treasury, and Strategic Finance. Success in this role requires a candidate who can turn abstract accounting determinations into audit-ready memoranda, recurring close entries, and effective internal controls while managing multiple consequential workstreams.
What you will do
- Manage operational accounting for complex financing, investment, equity, and capital arrangements through classification, measurement, presentation, disclosure, and recurring close processes.
- Partner with technical accounting to lead initial and recurring accounting for non-standard transactions like fair-value measurements, equity-method investments, and debt securities.
- Execute account reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, and drive lingering financial issues to resolution.
- Support the resolution of complex accounting matters during monthly and quarterly close cycles.
- Build operational processes to evaluate impairment indicators and asset recoverability for goodwill, intangible assets, and equity-method investments.
- Coordinate valuations for non-standard transactions alongside technical accounting and valuation specialists.
- Lead audit support for assigned investments by preparing evidence-backed schedules, memoranda, and reconciliations.
- Develop pragmatic accounting policies, playbooks, and decision frameworks that improve consistency and reflect economic substance.
What you need
- Hold a CPA, CA, or equivalent accounting qualification, or bring comparable demonstrated technical-accounting expertise.
- Bring five or more years of progressive experience in technical accounting, accounting advisory, public accounting, corporate controllership, or complex financial reporting.
- Demonstrate broad U.S. GAAP expertise across corporate accounting, financial instruments, consolidation, business combinations, impairment, and complex ownership structures.
- Apply relevant accounting guidance across ASC 320, 321, 323, 326, 350, 360, 470, 480, 718, 805, 810, 815, and 820.
- Develop or review audit-ready technical memoranda and implement conclusions effectively in recurring operations.
- Understand how technical accounting decisions directly affect journal entries, reconciliations, disclosures, and internal controls.
