Role Overview

ClickUp seeks a Machine Learning Engineer to join the Search team in the United States. The professional manages machine learning systems that drive search relevance and ground context for artificial intelligence features.

Key Responsibilities

Own the complete machine learning lifecycle for ranking and retrieval, covering training, deployment, and production serving.
Develop ranker features, training pipelines, and offline evaluation frameworks.
Design and scale hybrid retrieval systems combining lexical and vector search, including HNSW with disk offloading.
Execute embedding inference at the scale of billions of documents.
Enhance query understanding through query expansion and intent modeling.
Construct permissions-aware retrieval respecting multi-tenant boundaries.
Establish measurement frameworks to assess and elevate search quality.
Partner with backend, artificial intelligence, and search infrastructure teams to integrate ranking upgrades.

Requirements

Hold a Bachelor's degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
Bring a minimum of five years of machine learning engineering experience centered on information retrieval, ranking, or retrieval.
Demonstrate proven ownership of the full machine learning lifecycle from training to production serving.
Possess hands-on experience in ranker model training, including feature engineering and offline evaluation.
Show direct experience building hybrid retrieval systems that merge lexical and vector search.
Exhibit experience running large-scale embedding inference.
Demonstrate strong query understanding fundamentals such as intent modeling and query expansion.

Nice to Have

Experience with permission-aware retrieval and multi-tenancy.
Background in indexing large-scale user-generated content rather than small or static datasets.
Practical experience utilizing Elasticsearch or OpenSearch.
Familiarity with real-time ingestion, sharding, and index management at scale.
Experience in semantic search, natural language processing, or agentic retrieval.
Backend systems experience involving TypeScript.
