Engineers on the Product Explorations team spend their time building early-stage prototypes, testing new model capabilities, and collaborating across disciplines to ship new features. One week might involve developing a new ChatGPT experience, while the next requires exploring fresh model functionality alongside research partners.
OpenAI created this small, high-ownership group to transform emerging model capabilities into practical user experiences that improve engagement and revenue. Team members operate with substantial independence in an ambiguous environment, using product signals and user feedback to decide which prototypes should grow into larger product investments. Successful candidates are autonomous builders who enjoy creating products from scratch and navigating unstructured situations without a predefined roadmap.
What you will do
- Identify and pursue high-leverage product and technical opportunities across OpenAI's ecosystem.
- Move rapidly from initial concepts to working prototypes, validation, launch, and ongoing iteration.
- Build full stack product features that unlock the practical value of new model capabilities.
- Collaborate closely with research, applied, product, design, data science, and engineering partners.
- Utilize user feedback, product signals, and experimentation to determine which ideas scale into larger investments.
- Drive alignment across various teams while fostering a culture centered on speed, ownership, and curiosity.
What you need
- Demonstrated experience building and shipping full stack product experiences from early prototypes to production.
- Ability to thrive in early-stage, highly iterative environments with minimal structure.
- Strong product intuition combined with the capability to identify what matters most for users and the business.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, product, design, and research.
- High degree of autonomy, agency, and ownership when operating in ambiguous settings.
