About this role

Developing the Codex desktop app and IDE extension involves partnering closely with design to prototype, iterate, and polish new interaction models while turning them into reliable, high-performance products. This position centers on defining human-to-agent collaboration interfaces by determining UI elements, state representation, progress tracking, and user orientation during multi-step work.

OpenAI operates at the intersection of research, product, and design, shipping quickly to learn from real usage and continuously refine the harness connecting users to models. Individuals who thrive in this setting enjoy exploring ambiguous problems, possess a high bar for UI craft, and think in end-to-end workflows rather than isolated screens.

What you will do

  • Build and ship polished, high-performance user interfaces across the Codex desktop application and IDE extensions.
  • Partner tightly with the design team to transform prototypes into production-quality experiences covering layout, motion, typography, and interaction details.
  • Iterate on future interfaces for interacting with agents including delegation, task timelines, status tracking, handoffs, and review surfaces.
  • Own frontend architecture decisions encompassing component systems, state management, navigation, and rendering performance.
  • Improve quality and reliability through testing, instrumentation, and thoughtful user experience design for failure modes.
  • Collaborate with platform, model, and backend partners to integrate new capabilities into cohesive product flows.

What you need

  • Demonstrate strong experience working with modern frontend stacks such as React and TypeScript alongside a high bar for UI craft.
  • Show a commitment to design engineering by sweating details while maintaining rapid delivery velocity.
  • Bring experience building desktop-caliber product experiences using tools like Electron with a strong focus on performance and responsiveness.
  • Enjoy exploring ambiguous problems and iterating rapidly alongside design and product partners.
