Role Overview

The Forward Deployed Engineer position at Kong is a full-time, remote opportunity based in New Jersey, United States, specifically supporting Government and Public Sector customers. Key Responsibilities

Partner directly with enterprise clients to design, build, and deploy Kong solutions across hybrid, cloud, and on-premises environments.
Lead hands-on execution for API gateways, service meshes, AI gateways, and developer portals.
Construct automation frameworks, migration utilities, custom integrations, and reusable accelerators to streamline client adoption.
Spearhead migration projects moving from legacy API management platforms to Kong.
Engage with developer, platform, architecture, security, and executive teams to resolve intricate technical and operational roadblocks.
Write production-grade code, scripts, plugins, CI/CD integrations, Kubernetes automation, and infrastructure tooling.
Partner with internal product and engineering teams to share field insights and shape roadmap priorities.
Formulate reusable best practices, technical assets, and reference architectures to scale delivery standards.

Requirements

United States citizenship required to support Government and Public Sector Customers.
Eight or more years of professional background in software engineering, platform engineering, site reliability engineering, or customer-facing technical roles.
Robust hands-on software engineering and implementation proficiency.
Background working with distributed systems, API management, or API gateways.
Deep expertise in Kubernetes and cloud-native infrastructure.
Demonstrated ability building migration tooling, deployment utilities, automation frameworks, or CI/CD pipelines.
Solid command of Linux, networking, DevOps principles, and cloud infrastructure.
Experience leveraging major cloud ecosystems such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
Programming capability in languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, or related technologies.
Practical knowledge of Infrastructure-as-Code and automation tools like Terraform.

Nice to Have

Prior background in infrastructure software, open source, middleware, SaaS, or API management companies.
