Role Overview

Kong is developing Project Volcano, an internal developer platform created specifically for the engineering ecosystem of the company. This platform supplies engineering teams with on-demand preview environments, edge deployments, managed PostgreSQL, authentication, realtime capabilities, and storage APIs. Functioning as the Senior SRE for this initiative, the professional acts as the primary reliability voice for the platform. Operating as a strategic initiative via the Office of the CTO, the position collaborates closely with engineering leadership to determine the stability standards for the next-generation developer platform.

Key Responsibilities

Take ownership of reliability from end to end by establishing SLOs, error budgets, and incident response frameworks for all platform services, including edge deployments and managed databases.
Design and construct multi-region Kubernetes infrastructure, networking layers, and data planes that support the backend-as-a-service features.
Establish deployment automation, canary release pipelines, and preview environment provisioning through continuous delivery tooling.
Design, manage, and harden multi-tenant PostgreSQL clusters, caching layers, and object storage with strict standards for data isolation and disaster recovery.
Implement comprehensive observability by setting up SLIs, dashboards, alerts, and runbooks prior to service launch.
Partner alongside security, product engineering, and OCTO teams to embed compliance and stability directly into the architecture.
Investigate and integrate emerging technologies such as edge runtimes, serverless compute, vector databases, and AI-native infrastructure.

Requirements

Hold a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or an equivalent educational background.
Demonstrate substantial background working at a senior individual contributor capacity within site reliability or platform engineering.
Bring a proven history of establishing reliability standards for developer-facing platforms, PaaS offerings, or SaaS products.
Exhibit deep technical proficiency in multi-tenant Kubernetes cluster design, networking, autoscaling, and security hardening.
