About this role

The Engineering Manager, Browser Run position at Cloudflare is a hands-on leadership role based in Lisbon operating on a hybrid schedule. This position suits an experienced engineering leader who wants to drive the development, reliability, and growth of cutting-edge browser automation and AI agent tooling products.

Role Overview

As a hands-on engineering manager, this role involves owning Browser Run engineering completely—spanning team leadership, product roadmaps, system reliability, and customer communication. Reporting directly to the Senior Engineering Manager for AI Agents Tooling & Platform, the leader collaborates closely with product management, developer relations, and various platform groups across Cloudflare. While daily coding is minimal, the individual must possess deep technical understanding to evaluate design documents, assess architecture, and validate estimates. The scope centers heavily on Browser Run, with potential for broader team portfolio expansion over time.

Key Responsibilities

Manage, mentor, and expand the team of systems engineers through regular one-on-ones, performance tracking, career growth planning, and active hiring.
Own the end-to-end product roadmap and execution strategy, establishing clear priorities and scope limits.
Oversee the operational health of Browser Run, covering browser fleet capacity, session stability, cold-start latency reduction, on-call rotations, and incident response.
Maintain automation surface integrity, ensuring robust Puppeteer and Playwright compatibility alongside correct Chrome DevTools Protocol behavior.
Resolve complex cross-team dependencies involving Workers, Developer Platform, Security, and Billing departments.
Supervise commercial mechanics such as usage metering, quotas, plan limits, abuse prevention, and pricing insights.
Represent the product externally through launch articles, developer guides, conference speaking engagements, and direct customer interactions.

Requirements

Minimum of 2 years of experience successfully managing engineering teams, accompanied by a strong background as a hands-on engineer.
Demonstrated ownership of a production service from end to end, including capacity planning, on-call management, and incident reviews.
Proven history of developing engineers, supporting promotions, and fostering first-line managers or team leads.
Practical familiarity with browser automation frameworks and tools such as Chrome DevTools Protocol, Puppeteer, or Playwright, or direct knowledge of underlying browser internals.
Solid technical foundation in distributed systems, web platform fundamentals including HTTP, rendering, and JavaScript execution models, or cloud infrastructure.
Exceptional written communication skills for producing both internal design documents and public technical collateral.
Proven expertise in hiring practices, including authoring job descriptions, conducting interview loops, and calibrating hiring panels.

Nice to Have

Background operating headless browser infrastructure at scale, encompassing resource isolation, sandboxing, and fleet management.
Experience launching AI or agent-facing platform primitives, including tool-calling surfaces, MCP servers, or agent orchestration.
Familiarity with the Cloudflare Workers development ecosystem, such as Workers, R2, D1, Durable Objects, and Workflows.
History of taking internal tools and turning them into billed external products with integrated pricing and usage metering.
Experience leading distributed engineering teams spread across multiple time zones.
Active open-source maintainership or a recognized portfolio of public technical writing.
