OpenAI is creating a new generation of AI-powered consumer devices, and the Data Engineering team is building the foundational data infrastructure that supports the entire product lifecycle from manufacturing to launch.
Team members design and scale pipelines and datasets that connect information across factory operations, device telemetry, and quality assurance. This position offers significant ownership over technical decisions, allowing the right person to shape engineering standards and build durable architectures that scale alongside a rapidly growing business.
What you will do
- Design and implement reliable, scalable data pipelines and platforms to support hardware development and manufacturing.
- Integrate information across manufacturing systems, factory operations, and customer-facing operational systems.
- Develop reusable datasets and data architectures that enable consistent measurement and decision-making across teams.
- Connect manufacturing conditions and production history with downstream product performance and reliability signals.
- Build systems that evolve from early-stage development to large-scale consumer deployment.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers, operations leaders, and Data Scientists to translate requirements into technical solutions.
What you need
- Demonstrate exceptional data engineering fundamentals with a track record of building complex data systems.
- Bring strong technical judgment regarding data architecture, distributed systems, and data modeling.
- Possess experience developing production-grade pipelines and infrastructure across heterogeneous data sources.
- Show the ability to make architectural decisions autonomously as requirements evolve.
Nice to have
- Experience with hardware, consumer electronics, connected devices, or IoT
- Experience building data infrastructure for manufacturing, factory operations, or supply-chain systems
- Familiarity with device telemetry, reliability engineering, product quality, or failure analysis
- Experience supporting customer operations, technical support, or Trust and Safety
- A track record of building data platforms in a startup or rapidly scaling organization
