Role Overview

AP Automation Software is seeking a Backend Engineer for its engineering department located in Madrid, Spain, with a hybrid schedule of one to two days per week in the office. This full-time position suits experienced software developers who want to create production-grade AI systems and scalable backend infrastructure for autonomous accounting technology.

Key Responsibilities

Build and operate integration platforms that transfer data bidirectionally between financial systems and the core software.
Develop backend services including HTTP APIs, queue-based workers, and relational database management.
Design third-party API integrations utilizing REST, SOAP, OData, OAuth2, and webhooks with explicit, typed contracts.
Ensure job reliability by implementing idempotency, replay-safe logic, automated retries, rate limiting, dead-lettering, and audit logging.
Manage services through the entire lifecycle from initial development to production deployment on cloud infrastructure.
Build AI-assisted tooling designed to accelerate the customer onboarding process.
Support public APIs, core services, and adjacent backend domains as shifting company priorities demand.
Contribute to architectural decisions, long-term platform scalability, and security best practices.
Troubleshoot, monitor, and resolve system performance issues to maintain operational stability within defined SLAs.

Requirements

Two or more years of professional experience building and operating production backend systems.
Proficiency in TypeScript, Node.js, Elixir, Phoenix, or Python.
Experience designing integrations with third-party APIs and webhooks.
Knowledge of queue-based and distributed systems, focusing on idempotency, retries, and backpressure.
Track record of taking software from development to production and maintaining observability.
Experience scaling and optimizing relational databases.
Familiarity with IT security principles and secure coding practices.
Ability to work independently with strong personal ownership in a fast-paced setting.
Preferred background includes a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
