About this role
The Global Affairs team at OpenAI builds collaborative relationships with public officials and the AI policymaking community to align policy with the company's overarching mission. Within this function, the AI standards and global assurance group connects internal technical practices with external standards bodies.
Operating in this capacity, the Applied Risk Standards Architect leads the development of standards for applied risks such as mental health, youth safety, age assurance, efficacy, reliability, and privacy. The person in this position translates internal research, evaluation methods, and safety policies into measurable technical standards, while also representing the organization in priority bodies like ISO/IEC, INCITS, and NIST consortia.
Success in the role requires bridging deep technical evaluation science with external regulatory frameworks and policy negotiations. Someone who thrives here can build consensus across technical and legal teams, write precisely, and manage external workstreams without adding operational friction for internal researchers.
What you will do
- Lead the development and advancement of applied AI risk standards covering mental health, youth safety, age assurance, efficacy, reliability, and privacy-related risks.
- Collaborate with technical owners to convert internal policies, research, and evaluation methods into credible test methods and assessment criteria.
- Integrate emerging regulatory requirements into internal planning and coordinate implications for product evaluations, controls, and assurance.
- Partner with governance, risk, and compliance teams on assessor competence, independence, conflicts of interest, and the distinction between audits and technical evaluations.
- Contribute drafting, representation, and coordination for frontier risk-management and independent-assessment standards.
- Lead assigned standards-body workstreams, negotiate proposals, and coordinate internal input within ISO/IEC, INCITS, NIST consortia, and cross-industry groups.
- Maintain clear approval records, negotiating positions, and implementation handoffs to connect external commitments with internal technical teams.
What you need
- Demonstrated technical depth in evaluation science, AI evaluations, red teaming, AI safety, or trust and safety.
- Proven ability to translate technical expertise into credible standards, control frameworks, or assessment methods.
- Track record of authoring or materially shaping standards, evaluation criteria, or normative technical contributions.
- Ability to interpret broad safety objectives into clear requirements and define corresponding evidence.
- Understanding of the distinctions between organizational risk-management processes, model evaluations, and mitigation testing.
- Capacity to evaluate context-dependent outcomes and variation across users and use cases without overstating benchmark capabilities.
- Skill in building technical consensus, negotiating proposals, and communicating clearly with engineers, lawyers, and policymakers.
