About this role

OpenAI’s Applied AI Engineering team helps organizations turn frontier AI capabilities into safe, reliable, and high-impact production systems, specifically helping customers adopt Codex across the software development lifecycle. Team members work directly with engineering leaders and hands-on developers to design and implement AI-powered workflows, scale successful deployments, and translate real-world lessons into reusable architectures and better products.

Daily responsibilities involve partnering with external engineering organizations to take ambitious ideas from use-case selection through prototyping, evaluation, and scaled production rollout. Individuals build advanced coding workflows, integrations, and evaluation systems while making critical technical decisions regarding model behavior, security, and operational readiness. Success in this position is measured by sustained developer adoption and measurable improvements in how engineering teams build software.

Ideal candidates bring a strong background in software or applied AI engineering with a track record of taking systems from prototype to enterprise production. Professionals who enjoy hands-on coding, solving complex technical blockers, and communicating clearly with both developers and engineering leaders will find this hybrid role in Madrid a strong fit.

What you will do

  • Partner directly with engineering leaders to identify high-value opportunities for Codex and translate them into technical architectures and implementation plans.
  • Design, build, and deploy AI-powered software development workflows that improve how engineering teams plan, write, test, review, and deliver software.
  • Work hands-on in code to build prototypes, evaluation harnesses, reference implementations, and production accelerators.
  • Design systematic approaches for evaluating AI coding systems using representative software engineering tasks, automated graders, and developer feedback.
  • Diagnose complex implementation challenges, reproduce failures, test hypotheses, and drive technical blockers toward resolution.
  • Gather high-fidelity insights from real-world deployments to translate them into product proposals and model feedback for internal teams.
  • Create reusable architectures, tooling, examples, and technical patterns that accelerate future Codex deployments.

What you need

  • Demonstrated track record of designing, building, and delivering software or AI systems in enterprise environments, including taking systems from prototype to production.
  • Substantial personal contributions in code, architecture, evaluation, debugging, integrations, or production engineering.
  • High proficiency in Python and comfort working across modern software development environments.
  • Active user of AI coding tools with a strong point of view on improving developer productivity and software engineering workflows.
  • Experience navigating enterprise production requirements such as developer tooling integrations, reliability, observability, security, privacy, data governance, performance, and cost.
  • Ability to speak English and Spanish fluently.

Nice to have

  • Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, or another relevant language

Benefits

  • Relocation assistance to new employees
