About this role

Role Overview

Paraform is seeking a Technical Lead Manager for the AI Platform team to direct core machine learning and agentic systems in San Francisco. This position suits an experienced technical leader who enjoys spending at least a third of their time writing production code while managing a pod of applied AI, machine learning, and product engineers.

Key Responsibilities

Hire, coach, and level a pod of applied AI, machine learning, and product engineers with a focus on high judgment.
Own matching, ranking, and retrieval models at the code level, including data strategy, feature design, and model fine-tuning.
Solve ambiguous, high-risk machine learning challenges such as persistent ranking plateaus or difficult cold-start problems.
Build and maintain LLM-powered workflows and automation that handle real recruiting and operational tasks reliably.
Develop trust and safety systems to manage fraud detection, spam, and submission quality enforcement.
Create evaluation frameworks to measure model quality, reliability, and actual business impact in production.
Balance quality, cost, and latency by determining when to apply large language models versus traditional machine learning.
Translate ambiguous business goals into clear quarterly engineering execution plans.

Requirements

Staff-level individual contributor depth in machine learning or applied AI with a history of staying technical while leading.
Minimum of 1 year of experience managing or formally tech-leading engineers, or up to 4 years setting technical direction across multiple teams.
Experience shipping production machine learning or large language model systems used at scale.
Evaluation-driven mindset with the ability to measure model quality against real business outcomes.
Data fluency including the ability to write SQL queries and analyze experimental readouts.
Strong AI fluency with practical daily use of AI tools to maximize team leverage.
Strong written communication skills for operating norms, decision documents, and postmortems.
A strong desire to continue building and writing production code every week.
